John Haviland was born in New York in 1751. He joined the Royal Standard in 1776, in the corps commanded by Colonel James DeLancey. He remained with this corps until the Treaty of Separation in 1783. John came to Canada in 1787 and received 400 acres in the Township of Sydney, Prince Edward County. He lived there for four years, sold it and returned with permission to New York to recover his lost property.
