John Shaver was born in Germany and then lived in New Jersey where he took up the Loyalist cause and joined The King’s Royal Regiment of New York, Butler’s Rangers. After the war he settled in Ancaster on what is now Garner Road. The first known house was built on the site in 1830. A two-storey brick house, which still stands, was built in 1856.
